Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The release of ONLY BY THE NIGHT finds Kings of Leon taking the dynamic sound that has made them one of most respected bands in the world to an entirely new musical level. Starting with the haunting guitar riff of the opening track "Closer" through the melodic, stadium friendly strains of the first single "Sex on Fire," to the closing refrain of "Cold Desert," ONLY BY THE NIGHT firmly places Kings of Leon in a musical class shared by very few.

Amazon.com

Despite a wave of criticism asserting that Kings of Leon's fourth full-length is "too commercial," Only by the Night may be the closest thing to a pitch-perfect album to drop in 2008. Granted, Tennessee's band of brothers (and one first cousin) takes a turn for the heavily polished here, but what the album lacks in rough-edged raunch, it more than makes up for in earnestness and--yes--stunning beauty. From the opening notes of "Closer" to the listing balladry of "Cold Desert," Only by the Night hardly misses a beat. Highlights abound, particularly in the trading off of melodic lines between instruments, and in this regard, bassist Jared Followill is the album's quiet MVP. Above these gorgeous instrumentals, singer Caleb emotes with a dramatic grit that never loses its command. A model of melodic rock composition, arranged and produced with a warm, inviting veneer, and performed with aching sincerity, these 11 tracks coalesce into a sanguine whole that eclipses the band's much-discussed rock posturing and yields more with every play. A good band's great album, Only by the Night (finally) establishes Kings of Leon as a rock act that's worthy of seriously sustained attention. --Jason Kirk

Audio quality review - 5 stars
Rather than focus on the very subjective topic of the like ability of this band, I will focus instead on the audio quality of this particular disk.Streaming music, even the mysterious and still unattainable “Hi Res” streaming music cannotcompare in audio quality to a CD player hard wired to headphones. (Bluetooth cannot carry lossless audio). It is immaterial if the streaming CODEX source is AptX, LDAC, FLAC, ALAC, SACD or other allegedly “lossless” streaming, it’s not as good a signal as a wired CD.Why? Because there is inevitably a weak link/hitch in the data transfer in streaming music. For more on that topic, refer to the fine YouTube narratives on the subject by audio expert John Darko.Wires remove all streaming hitches. A CD player connected to a reasonable quality headphone amp via RCA analog cables connected to wired headphones is still THE best audio reproduction quality. It’s simple physics. That might change down the road but not today. This particular disk is very well cut, the separation is good, bass tracks have some thump, it’s completely noiseless (sorry vinyl fans, CD’s have a QUIET background) and it’s a pleasure to listen to this CD on headphones. For the audio maniacs out there, my headphone system is a semi-vintage McIntosh MVP-861 CD player circa 2006, iFi Zen Air Can MZ-99 and Meze Classic 99 wired headphones. The Ifi Zen Air Can amp is tuned from the factory specifically for the Meze 99’s. With this CD playback setup (or any decent wired setup), this disk is a transcendent audio experience. Hope that helps!
