“for so long
\ni thought if i could just become. enough.
\nthat it would be enough for him to be good to me
\nuntil i finally realized that wasn't what he wanted.<\/p>\n

he wanted me to be pretty enough
\nto be beautiful in his eyes,
\nbut my eyes better not be too bright,
\nand that dress better not be too short,
\nand those lips better not be too full of lush and love
\nor talk of too much life for anyone else to see
\nsomething beautiful in me\u2026
\nor heaven forbid,
\nfor me to see something beautiful in myself.
\nand those dreams i had to find my voice and to spill
\nall the wild from my heart out into the world\u2026
\nif i was chasing those dreams,
\nthen i wouldn't be small enough or sitting still enough as
\nthe sure thing there waiting while he was chasing his.
\nthe more i tried to be. enough. the more i became too much.<\/p>\n

because underneath all the ways he needed me to be small,
\n\u201cenough\u201d is what he felt like he wasn't.”<\/em>
